Aluminium sliding doors vs. bifold doors – what’s right for your build?

December 1, 2025 fleix DESIGN & SELECTION

Aluminium sliding doors and bifold doors remain the two most-requested opening systems for modern villas. Both styles can maximise daylight and blur indoor/outdoor boundaries, but their operating principles and hardware requirements are very different. Understanding those differences early helps contractors choose the optimal solution for their client’s layout, wind-load conditions, and desired maintenance profile.

1. Opening Behaviour & Space Planning

Sliding doors operate on one or multiple tracks, stacking panels behind each other. They are ideal for balconies or tight terraces where there isn’t space for panels to swing out. Bifold doors, on the other hand, fold like an accordion and can completely clear the opening. They deliver the most expansive aperture but require recessed channels and careful structural support to handle the added weight.

2. Weather Performance & Seal Strategy

Dimax sliding systems use interlocking stiles, double EPDM seals, and low-friction hardware to achieve AS2047 and Miami NOA compliance. Bifolds rely on multiple hinges and shoot bolts; they can meet the same ratings when paired with continuous sill gaskets and multipoint locking, but installers must spend extra time aligning each leaf.

3. Recommended Applications

  • Luxury residences: Use bifolds to frame pool decks or courtyards where a fully open corner is desired.
  • High-rise apartments: Sliding doors provide a slimmer frame sightline and better wind resistance for exposed balconies.
  • Commercial storefronts: Mix sliding panels for daily traffic with bifolds for event mode to create flexible circulation.
